Clinically speaking, its an inflammation of subcutaneous tissues, brought on by clogged skin pores. The inflammation is a result of simple skin irritation, but the reality is so much more.

Acne affects our self-esteem, the way our peers interact with us, and for adults, even our professional lives. Unfortunately, most medical treatments are ineffectual at best, and downright harmful at worst. Fortunately, looking backward at home remedies and naturopathic medicine gives us insight into how controlling acne can be done in straightforward, innocuous ways.

Avocado Oil Wash

Avocado oil, which is the oil extracted from the avocado fruit, is one of the mildest naturally occurring oils around. It’s a rich source of monounsaturated fat, and by virtue of being extracted by a cold-pressed process, has a very low acid content. This makes it an ideal moisturizing skin cleanser, which helps remove oil from the surface of your skin before pores are clogged. Since its generally sold in a very natural state, it retains the antioxidants and vitamin E found in the parent fruit. These help aid in keeping skin supple and smooth.

Tea Tree Oil

A staple of many households before the advent of modern pharmaceuticals, tea tree oil is an essential oil with a number of health benefits. It’s been shown to have mild antiseptic, antifungal, and antibacterial properties, and has been specifically shown to be more effective at treating acne than the modern day synthetic benozyl peroxide.

Citrus Peel

Synthetic acid cleansers are common ingredients in topical acne treatments sold over the counter. However, those synthetic compounds are harsh, and often cause skin to turn dry and flaky. Instead, turn to the gentler citrus acid found in orange and lemon peels. Applying the peels directly to affected areas. For a more effective treatment, toss the rinds in a food processor and apply the resulting paste directly to the acne.

Cucumber Wash

Cucumbers are used worldwide as a skin wash, and to reduce puffiness around the eyes. A good source of silica, which restores connective tissue in skin, cucumbers masks are commonly used in high-end spas. Cucumbers are also contain moderate levels of caffeic acid and ascorbic acid, which aid in the removal of dead tissue.

Glycolic Acid

Glycolic acid is a component of sugar cane that has also gained notoriety for its skin restorative effects. Made at home from pureed sugar cane, glycolic acid has been recommended by world helath experts as one of the most effective mild skin cleansers. As a bonus, blend honey into your homemade glycolic peel for its regenerative effects.

Despite its reputation for being a hard-to-treat malady, treating acne doesn’t require expensive, harsh, synthetic chemicals. In fact, as shown above, some of the most popular and expensive treatments available today are simply rediscoveries of what was known by our grandparents. So apply a little of their knowledge to reduce the effect acne can have on your life.

Meditation is something that anyone can benefit from, without needing advanced training or study.

The main objective of meditation is, in the main, to focus one’s mind and achieve a sense of well-being and calm.

One of the main meditation benefits is stress relief, which is something that everyone needs in our busy world.

Simple and Easy Steps That Any Beginner Can Follow:

Sit Comfortably – Find a spot where you can sit in a comfortable position. You could sit on the floor, or in your favorite chair.

Minimise Distractions – Try to sit in a place without the usual daily distractions of everyday life. Switch off the TV, radio, phone and put the kids in the closet (or tell them to go outside and leave you alone for a time). Removing distractions will better help you to focus your mind and improve concentration.

Choose a Mantra – A mantra is simply a word, phrase, or even a sound that has special meaning to you. You could use something that enforces what you would like to be, for example, a better person, better health, more prosperous and successful. It could even be a phrase from your favorite author or speaker. The standard “Ommm” sound may also work well for you if you cannot think of anything suitable. Some people even use their own names. As long as it helps you to feel positive and relaxed, it will work as a mantra.

Start Meditating – Sit comfortably, and begin repeating your mantra. You can say it out loud or silently in your head. A slow steady pace is preferable. Repeating it too fast will tend to make you more tense, which is the opposite of what you are trying to achieve.

Mantra Alternatives

Counting each breath: If you do not wish to use a mantra, another meditation technique that could be used is to focus on your breathing patterns and count your breaths. This is just as effective as a mantra and may be easier for some people.

Using Imagery: This is more of an advanced meditation technique, but is highly effective if you can get “in the zone”. If you are looking to experience a greater sense of peace for example, you could imagine yourself in a gently swaying boat on a placid lake. For increased vitality or energy, perhaps imagine vivid colours or performing an activity that you enjoy.

Maintaining Your Focus

While meditating, ignoring outside distractions will initially be a problem for many people. The trick is to turn your focus onto your mantra and keep it in the center of your mind. When you feel it drifting away or being pushed aside by other thoughts, focus on your mantra again to bring it back to the fore.
This is one of the hardest parts of meditating to get right, but keep practising and it will become easier. Your focus, along with your awareness, will improve as you keep at it.

Finishing Up

You can meditate for as long as you like. If you only have time for a short meditation, then that is better than nothing. When you are done, try not to get up immediately. Remain seated but stop repeating your mantra. Let your mind slowly adjust back into the daily grind of the real world. Getting up too quickly is similar to jumping out of bed after a deep sleep. It causes unneccessary stress, so just take your time.

Meditation is something that you should try to do consistently. Allocate some of this “me” time on a frequest basis, and the benefits will surely become evident.

What is Art Therapy and the two major forms of it? At the very basics, Art therapy is the use of artistic expression through the use of art materials to improve someone’s life. While this definition is very broad, so are the ways art therapy is used around the world, and in different settings within your own community. Here are the two major methods in which art is used, and some of the places you will find it practiced.

The first use of art therapy is in the simple therapeutic action of creating art. When someone becomes involved in the creative process, whether using paints, ceramics, or even crayons and paper, they can release inner tension and feel joy in their ability to create. For some people this is the most liberating form of therapy since their other avenues of expression seem to be closed off. This can include autistic children, very young children, and seniors suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

In many of these situations their art work may not resemble anything spectacular, but just the act of being busy, feeling productive, and having fun can help remove trauma, and give them new confidence. This is not limited in use to persons with communications challenges, but is beneficial to almost everyone. The process of being creative takes our minds away from other troubles, and gives us a break from our troubles.

The second use of art therapy is both creative, and also used as a form of communication. The therapist may lead the patient through some directions, or life situations and then ask them to draw or paint a picture describing how this feels to them. For persons with communications issues this can be very liberating. While they may be unable to express their feelings, needs, and problems by the spoken or written word, they may be able to create pictures which relays the message, even if they are poorly drawn.

This form of therapy and communication is used extensively with younger children, autistic children and adults, and again with people suffering from strokes, Alzheimer’s, or other conditions limiting their communication ability. Putting the paint brush in their hands allows them to communicate in a new way, and to work on getting their message understood.

What is art therapy’s benefit to the therapist? Without the communication made possible by the drawing and pictures, they may never be able to determine the person’s needs and problems. With this feedback they can work with their patients, and then monitor their changes by having new pictures drawn at various times. Art therapy opens the door for both therapeutic activity, and enhanced communication, both which are important tools for any therapist. Art therapy is most commonly practiced by trained psychologists and counselors, but you may find other therapists using the practice, too. When you inquire about art therapy, always make sure you understand what their qualifications are before starting the sessions. It is an important tool, but best used by qualified people.

Imagine seeing your pet laying on a table with needles sticking out of various parts of their body. While this image may be a bit shocking, it would be the image you will see if you choose to use Veterinary acupuncture. Before you run away screaming, stop and think about why you may want to consider this form of treatment.

Having dogs, cats, and other pets always comes with one big hazard. Our pets manage to become part of our family, and when old age or illness starts causing them pain the entire family feels it. Watching our pet struggling to get up into their favorite chair and wincing in pain can almost bring a tear to our eye. We do not wish to see them suffer.

We head to the vet and they start recommending pain killers, surgery, or other forms of treatment. Some veterinarians have discovered another alternative which can often give these pets tremendous relief. They have discovered using acupuncture on our pets can be just as effective for animals as it is for humans.

Acupuncture works on the theory of our body having energy meridians, or nerve centers, which when properly stimulated can cause adjustments in our bodies responses and healing, giving both temporary relief and sometimes longer term healing. Our pets bodies are similar to our own in many ways. Their bodies are filled with nerves, energy flow, and the same life energy and spirit we have. By treating them in a similar manner they get similar relief.

The challenge for you is going to be finding a vet, or pet therapist who does veterinary acupuncture. The practice is growing in acceptance and popularity, but in many communities it is simply not available yet. If your vet does not offer the service, ask them if they know where you may be able to find a qualified acupuncturist. If he comes up blank you can do a search online or browse through your yellow pages.

Going to a normal acupuncturists office is not going to do you much good. They have not studied animal anatomy and physiology to know the proper locations for using the acupuncture needles on your pet. Some of them may be willing to try, explaining they can feel the energy flow through their hands and determine the right spot. Your pet will be in better hands if you take the time to find someone trained in the art of veterinary acupuncture.

Is veterinary acupuncture a sure fire solution for pain management with all pets? The answer is an absolute no. There is no method of treatment which is effective for humans or our pets all the time. It can be highly effective for many pets, and gives you another option you can explore with the help of your vet. Pain does not need to be a constant problem for your pet, it can be managed through the use of acupuncture.

Did you believe aromatherapy was only one thing? The are a minimum of five different kinds of aromatherapy, using the essential oils in differing ways to improve your life.

The two most common uses of aromatherapy are Olfactory and Massage. Olfactory is the smelling of the essential oils either directly, in a steam, or from a misting bottle. The scents of the oils are used to relax your nerves, calm the senses, and give you a new area of focus. It can be a very relaxing way of using aromatherapy.

Massage therapy using the essential oils is very common, also. Mixing the essential oils with other carrier oils allows for a relaxing, soothing, massage which penetrates the skin, and stimulates the sense of smell at the same time. Using the aromatic oils for massage can give be very relaxing, stress relieving, and increases circulation. It is a great way to ease the pain of sore muscles, and to help balance your body energy.

Cosmetic aromatherapy takes the essential oils and uses them in cosmetics, baths, cleansing agents, and in other ways of beautifying and maintaining our bodies. Adding a little essential oil to the bath water, or buying lotions, creams, and makeup which include aromatherapy oils can all help in creating a more relaxing and pleasing way of living. If you prefer, you can use your normal lotions or creams and mix in a few drops of your favorite essential oils to give it a little added bonus. Using the essential oils in a hot steamy bath can help open your skin pores, give your nose a delicious treat, and soothe your senses.

Medical aromatherapy is not highly practiced, but you will find some Doctors who use forms of alternative medicine recommending the use of essential oils. There are some instances the essential oils are ingested, but never do this without instructions from your Doctor. Even in the cases where it is recommended the oils are highly diluted in purified water first. This is one area in the types of aromatherapy you should never venture into on your own.

Our final stop in types of aromatherapy are Psychoaromatherapy. Some therapists and psychologists have discovered using the essential oils for stimulating the senses can be beneficial in increasing the effectiveness of the psychological therapy. The scents may help to bring back memories, stimulate conversation, or give an added area of mental focus. By using a variety of scents the therapist can explore their patients reactions, and discuss their feelings, deepening communication, and enhancing treatment. Therapists are always seeking new ways to open doors to give them greater insights and provide more help to their clients. Aromatherapy can be an aid to these therapists.

As you explore aromatherapy further you may run across even more types of aromatherapy. Many times these other alternatives fall under one of these classifications, but do not be shocked if you find other new ways to gain benefits from aromatherapy. The power of essential oils and the scents of the plants around us are a powerful stimulant to improving human life.

How is Tibetan Meditation different from other kinds of meditation? In most ways it is amazingly similar. In the beginning stages of Tibetan meditation you are seeking to quiet your mind, focusing on your breathing, and doing almost identical things to any other form of meditation.

If you ask a Tibetan Monk about his form of meditation, and whether it is better than other forms, you may be surprised by his answer. He will probably tell you all forms of meditation are equal and can lead to the same results. Tibetan meditation itself contains hundreds of different techniques, methods, and ideas which you can explore, but the overall depth of intent is where this form of meditation steps away from most other forms.

Tibetan meditation can lead you to peace of mind, relieve stress, and give you greater clarity of thought like all other forms of meditation. A Tibetan Monk practicing meditation is seeking something a little more. They are striving and meditating to reach a state of Nirvana. Nirvana is a hard concept to wrap our thinking minds around. Nirvana is basically allowing your spirit, mind, or inner self to join with and expand into the immensity of everything. If you conceive of everything being composed of energy, thought, or vibrations from the origin of all time, they are seeking to allow their mind to enter into this state of immensity.

For most people, they are not moving into meditation to initially experience Nirvana, but are beginning into meditation to free their minds from the endless thoughts and talk streaming through their minds. At no moment in their busy day is there a second where thoughts, internal dialog, and often self-criticism are not at work. Using meditation to still these thoughts for even a few moments, and to be able to experience your quiet being is uplifting, relaxing, and inspiring. For a few moments you experience the core of yourself and not all of those endless streams of words you are hurling through your mind. How often have you wished you would just shut up, so you could think? Our own voice in our head is often the most distracting and harmful voice in our lives.

The quietness of meditation is the state where you first find the peace of mind, which leads to the lowered stress, and other healthy benefits. With continued practice of meditation most people begin to experience it on a more spiritual side, feeling closer to a universal power or their Creator. If you continue to practice meditation, seeking to move deeper and deeper into the spiritual revelations and feelings is where you begin moving towards the ideals of Tibetan meditation. You may even begin to seek the same goal as the Monks practicing in their temples, on mountains, and in their quiet sanctuaries.

Try Tibetan meditation to begin seeking your own healthy benefits, and then see where it leads you in your spiritual growth. It can be a road of great joy, peace, and success.

Aromatherapy is filled with unique scents used to soothe the senses and improve your mental state. The scents come from the essential oils of flowers and other aromatic plants. Are there any risks of aromatherapy usage?

In most cases aromatherapy is extremely safe. The oils are extracted from the plant material and most times are filtered removing pollens which cause allergic reactions. For people who are very sensitive to plant allergies caution should still be used. It is not common for people to have allergic reactions, but you do not want to ignore the possibility.

The other health area which can raise a few concerns is asthma. Asthma attacks can be triggered by many different sources, and introducing new scents always carries a minor risk. Make sure you keep in mind the risk and keep your asthma medicine handy when you try new essential oils. If you discover a particular scent or oil which triggers either an asthma or allergy attack, dispose of this oil, and do not purchase it again.

Perhaps the biggest risks of aromatherapy comes when you create overblown expectations of what it can do for you. If you buy into some of the wild claims of healing, correcting major physical or mental distresses, or other extreme claims, you will put yourself at risk. In this case it is not the aromatherapy causing the risk, but your ideas of the capabilities of the treatment. Consider aromatherapy as an aid to soothing your mind and spirit. It works wonderfully at helping to deepen focus, meditation, and to bring your mind away from thoughts and conditions which may be causing you unnecessary stress.

The only other risks you might run into are with your methods of using aromatherapy. When you use boiling water, steamers, and other heating elements to release the scents of the essential oils into the air there is a small risk of burning yourself. This is perhaps a bigger risk to our young children. Make sure any heating methods are kept well away from their exploring hands. As we all know, children are going to try to grab, pull, and explore any new and interesting things in our homes. Protect your children by keeping the heaters high and out of their reach.

To give you an indication of safety of aromatherapy, even the Nation Cancer Institute has published a report on their website discussing the safety of aromatherapy. In the same article they cover what we just discussed, do not expect miraculous cures from the use of aromatherapy, use it for the calming and mind changing influence it offers.

The risks of aromatherapy are very small, while the mind calming, and emotional benefits can be great. Using aromatherapy to enhance your other treatments, or your life in general, is both safe and rewarding. You can let go of your fears, and start enjoying the benefits of using the beautiful scents emanating from the essential oils. You will enjoy the new fragrances, and how they can help calm your spirit.

You have probably heard about all the benefits meditation can give you. The improved concentration, reduced stress, increased feelings of self-worth, and happiness. The benefits are all items everyone of us wishes to have. Meditation for beginners can be filled with challenges. Learning to quiet your mind, and reach a peaceful state is not always easy at first. Here are some suggestions to help you get started.

1. Do not become anxious about your meditation. This may seem very obvious, but when you start meditating for the first time you may feel a pressing need to successfully meditate and reach a peaceful state. When you start meditating with a feeling of ambitiousness, and pressing desire, you complicate the process for yourself. Allow your first sessions to be times of trial, error, and playfulness. When unwanted thoughts keep creeping in, just observe them, give a little chuckle about it, and then try to let them go again.

2. Breathe deeply and focus on your breathing. Take slow, deep, breaths filling your lungs gradually, and exhaling gradually. Focus on the feeling of the air going in an out of your body, imagining the positive energy flowing in with the fresh air. With the exhale, imagine the tension, stress, and bad feelings of life flowing out of your body on the wind of your breath. Do not try to picture specific thoughts, just focus on the act of breathing and the positive feeling it brings.

3. As you settle down to meditate, take time to inventory your body. Let your mind flow to each finger, each toe, your arms, legs, and all your body parts. Feel each body part releasing the tension and relaxing. As you feel the body part, allow your mind to return to the breathing, and picture the tension of the body parts flowing out with each of your exiting breaths.

4. Make a habit of your meditation practice. Meditation for beginners requires consistency. Meditation is like any other activity in life, the more consistently you practice it, the more effective you become at it. Schedule time for your meditation, and then keep the schedule. If possible, use the same location in your home for your meditation. Consistency in practicing will make each session more effective.

5. Study meditation techniques through reading or watching videos. Try the techniques which feel positive to you, and discard the others. Your meditation is meant to be your own unique experience. Do not get deeply worried about the form or techniques, worry more about the quietness, and the feelings you acquire through meditation.

As our last piece of advice, do not get caught up in the success or failure of any session, or group of sessions. You may have a few great days of meditation where you feel like everything is coming together, and then go through several days where your thoughts will not quiet. The important thing in meditation for beginners is to keep trying. As you practice over the long haul the times of an overly active mind will decrease, and the successful days of meditation will increase. Even people who have used meditation for years experience occasional bad days. Stick with your plan, and you will soon start seeing and feeling the benefits of meditation.

What is your expectation of meditation? Do you expect the meditation benefits to include a spiritual awakening, some health benefits, or just reduced stress in your life?

Meditation is practiced in almost every culture around the world in one form or another, but is still one of the most misunderstood practices. Meditation benefits reported by individuals range from very simple relaxation, all the way to life changing insights. What should you expect from meditation?

The most common benefits experienced by almost every person who meditates includes reduced stress, a clearer mind, and more happiness. Just the practice of using meditation to quiet you noisy mind, control your breathing, and totally relax can give you major health benefits. Medical and psychological studies have shown measurable changes in blood pressure, stress levels, and an increase in the general sense of wellbeing.

For many people who practice meditation it goes far beyond these simple benefits. While in their quiet states of meditation they receive inspiration, answers to problems, and guidance in dealing with life. Their quiet mind is able to actually hear the answers they have been needing, instead of those answers being drowned out by their own self-talk. Are these answers from a divine source or from their own sub-conscious mind? Choose the answer which gives you the most comfort, and motivation, and seek your own answers during meditation.

The best part of the meditation benefits is their long term effects. Meditation is not only beneficial for the time you are meditating and a short period of time afterwards. Your reduced stress, feelings of wellbeing, and happiness last throughout the day. With continued practice of meditation you begin feeling these states as your normal way of living, instead of a few captured moments throughout the week. How valuable would it be to you to have those feelings? Is it worth investing a few minutes per day to change you entire relationship to life?

There are a wide variety of different forms of meditation, choose the one which feels most comfortable to you, and you will stick with. Most forms of meditation use a quiet, still body to help in clearing and focusing the mind. If you cannot imagine sitting still, you may want to try Tai Chi, which is a form of soft martial arts characterized by slow, rhythmic movements. You can reach a meditative state while focusing on the breathing and movements of Tai Chi. You may not reach as deep of a meditative state, but if you know there is no way for you to sit still it is a great alternative.

Meditation benefits do not only affect your health and mental state, they can affect your finances. Instead of visiting doctors, therapists, or using prescriptions, you treat yourself with a quiet, positive mind. Your health and mental state improves through consistent practice of meditation. With all the benefits it can bring to your life, you should begin meditating today.

How big of a role does color play in your life, your decisions, and your feelings? You might offhand answer “Not Much.” You want to make a little wager on that? Color therapy for depression is based upon the proven facts learned by science, and more importantly, by your top advertising specialists.

Did that stir your attention a little? How does advertising have anything to do with treating depression or changing your mood? Advertising research is done on every aspect of the ads effectiveness, especially in print advertising. They know what colors create more response for positive advertising campaigns, and what colors play an important role in negative campaigns.

Who else knows these secrets? What about producers and directors in Hollywood? They know by simply varying the color of a scene, changing the color of a costume, or even the color of lipstick plays a crucial role in the emotions felt by their viewers.

Do these people know how to treat depression? Of course not, but they have proven a point which can be used by therapists and psychologists. Knowing that colors affects our emotions allows us to use colors during therapy to probe into deeper questions, to use colors to modify moods, and to evaluate a person’s inner health.

Every person has their own choices of favorite colors and shades, but there are many universal colors which have known effects. Changing from a beautiful earthy grass green to a dingy shade of gray brown is going to take a person from picturing life, growth, and spring, to picturing decay, lack of life, and the descent into winter. Which color is going to be more useful to someone trying to recover from depression?

Color therapy is not just something for a therapist to use to analyze your condition, and to help you recognize issues, it can be a powerful aid for yourself to use in treating depression. Choosing colors to surround yourself which reflect life, energy, and happiness are going to aid in turning your thoughts in a more positive direction. When you feel depressed you commonly will start leaving the lights turned down, wearing clothes with a more faded appearance, and not taking time to appreciate life. By making an effort to brighten your atmosphere, wear brighter apparel, and just noticing the colors, you can affect your mood. By itself it is not going to heal your depression, but it can help.

There is a little trick to using color therapy for depression for yourself. Do not become overly focused on the fact. Do not push yourself to have the emotions of the colors, just allow the colors to seep into your life, and to create their own influence. You already have enough stress and thoughts. Use color therapy to gradually turn your thoughts and emotions in the direction you desire. If you still have doubts, ask your therapist what impact he believes color plays in your life. You may have just found a new technique to help yourself, or a family member change their lives.
