One field that is common among chiropractors is that of applied kinesiology – over one third of United States chiropractors use this method for at least some of their patients, making it one of the more common methods of alternative medicine.

Patients who are being tested with the applied kinesiology method are told to resist movement and use of muscles while the chiropractor applies force to various muscle groups. Rather than testing raw strength, the test evaluates tension to indicate various health issues. Although a good response is called “strong” and a poor response is called “weak”, this is not referring to physical strength at all – rather, it is referring to the implied health of that muscle group.

Another main component of applied kinesiology is nutrient testing, which tests a patient’s reaction to various chemicals and nutrients. This usually involves placing various chemicals near the skin, or having the patient hold a bottle of pills. Proponents of this theory state that if the patient has a negative, or weak, reaction to the pills, then they should avoid ingesting those pills.

There is much controversy about the study and practice of applied kinesiology. While some studies have shown that these treatments may not be as effective as other methods, many studies from the International College of Applied Kinesiology strive to prove otherwise. It is true that there are no official measurement standards with this method, so the results are subjective. Due to this, it is possible that one could have much better results with one chiropractor than with another. This makes it hard for widespread studies of random testing to accurately portray the effectiveness of applied kinesiology.

The Alexander Technique is a discipline of alternative health that has been in use since the 1890’s. The basic premise of the technique is that one needs to improve posture and movement while using muscles efficiently in order to improve overall health.

Those who are using the technique are given a set of exercises that are intended to release muscular tension in various areas of the body. These exercises are not purely physical; many also involve mental focus and relaxation. One important theory behind the Alexander Technique is that humans tend to subconsciously hold certain muscle groups in perpetual tension, which leads to health problems. Through a method known as debauched sensory appreciation, followers of the technique are able to train themselves to work through certain circumstances and get out of the habit of tensing muscle groups unnecessarily. Students of this method are taught to sense bad movement habits and then inhibit them – with enough repetitions, the bad habits will be replaced by good ones.

The main use of the Alexander Technique is to regain movement. Although this works for many muscle groups, the technique has been historically used by singers to reduce vocal cord strain. Today, the method is especially popular in reducing back pain. Recent studies have proved these treatments effective both for reducing back pain and for reducing vocal cord tension.

Although the Alexander Technique is most popular in the United Kingdom, it is growing in popularity around the world. Classes that use this method have been showing up in the United States and Asia as well, while online support websites ensure that this technique is available worldwide. Although this alternative healing method is much different than most, the methods taught are effective and relative in nearly all daily activities, allowing people to have a more balanced lifestyle.
