What are Day Spas?
A day spa is a form of spa where visitors go and stay for most of the day. During their stay, they will enjoy great food, massages, facials, body treatments, and more. The experience is generally geared towards rejuvenation and relaxation. Many people who visit a day spa visit so that they can take a day off of their busy life to have some time to themselves. Although spas of many different types have been around since antiquity, the modern day spa started growing in popularity during the 1980s as the idea spread from France to other countries.
Facials at day spas are generally used to purify the skin on the face and help remove impurities and make the skin smooth. Usually, this is done through a face mask, where a cream with various natural extracts is allowed to soak on the face for 5 to 15 minutes. Extracts such as watercress, sage, ivy, mint, chamomile, and lavender oil are common. These also generally invoke a pleasant feeling on the face, especially after the mask has been washed away.
The massage is generally a main highlight of a trip to the day spa. The massage can take on many different forms. For healing, many choose to undergo acupressure treatment, which is similar to a massage. Foot massages are quite common, especially among businesspeople that are on their feet a lot and have to do a lot of walking. Other common target areas for a massage include the back and the neck, as well as the head. The massage can help in many ways, especially pain relief and stress relief. It is also common to use massage as a treatment for depression.
During the massage, it is not uncommon to find that a form of aromatherapy is used. Whether it is for the relaxing nature of the pleasant smells, or for the other therapeutic and healing effects that some oils are believed to have, it is generally an important part of the massage process. Sometimes, some of the essential oils are also used on the body during the massage.
Body treatments are common in day spas as well. Whether it is purification through steam, in a sauna or steam box, or body wraps, there are many different methods of body treatment. This also includes waxing to remove undesired body hair. Additionally, the skin may be exfoliated to remove deeper impurities.
Exfoliation at a day spa generally is done with chemical peels or microdermabrasion. This can help remove dirt and other impurities that are deeper in the skin and that might not otherwise be removed through normal bathing. This can also help open up the pores and can increase overall health.
There are day spas for both men and women. Although they differ in that manicures and pedicures are much more common at female day spas, both types have many of the same treatments, and they both exist for the same purpose – to relax and rejuvenate the client. A visit to the day spa is definitely a stress-relieving experience.
