What are Dietitians?

March 9, 2010

As the name implies, a dietitian is someone who studies food and the nutritional elements of food, as well as how these nutrients affect one’s health. Dietitians are well respected scientists who are involved in many different industries, including the food service industry, the weight-loss industry, research, education, and general health. The term nutritionist is also used to describe someone who studies one diet and nutrition but is not accredited. Dietitians must make it onto a board and pass an accreditation test. Whether you need to lose weight or overcome a disease, seeing a dietitian is a good idea. They often offer more natural methods of healing that are just as scientifically valid, if not even more so, than other modern medical techniques.

Clinical dietitians are the ones that you see in doctor’s offices. They are there to help advice people on what dietary changes they need to make in order to stay healthy. They often work alongside regular physicians in order to ensure the best overall health of the patient. Sometimes, their dietary advice can provide the entire solution for a health problem. There are recent findings that link nearly every health problem to diet, whether it is diabetes, acne, or even some types of cancer. Clinical dietitians typically recommend dietary changes above medications.

Another common type of dietitian is a food service dietitian. These people work with restaurants of all types to plan the menu and make it healthy and safe. They also work with large scale communities, such as schools and prisons, to ensure that the weekly menu offers healthy options. They often set standards on how food should be prepared, as well as what contents and nutritional benefits should be in each meal serving. When it comes to the menu you are looking at when you go to a fine dining restaurant, chances are that a dietitian had an integral role in planning the options available on the menu, as well as the sizes of the portions.

Research dietitians are also very important. These people work for large companies as well as independent non-profit organizations to research the various health benefits and risks that go along with certain foods. They are the ones who try and determine how much of each nutrient someone needs to have in a given day. They are also the ones who try and figure out the negative effects that go along with various chemicals and fats. Research dietitians will often work to find healthier replacements to common food ingredients.

There are many other types of dietitians, these are just a few of the most common types that you will encounter either directly or indirectly. There are many other nutrition worker types, including consultant dietitians that work in their own private practice, as well as business dietitians who represent food manufacturing companies. Although there is still much to learn in this field, it is true that much of what we eat today is affected by the input of professional dietitians. The next time you open a bag of your favorite snack food, try and remember all the research that dietitians put into making the contents of that bag exactly to their specifications.
