What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a treatment method that uses oils and plant materials to create aromas that are believed to be beneficial for one’s health. Although it has been around since ancient days, it was first formalized as a theory in the early 1900’s. Although effectiveness has not been proven, there are several studies that show that it is probable that some oils have therapeutic potential, including a recent study from Japan that shows that various oils reduced stress in mice.

There are three widely practiced methods of aromatherapy. The first, which is the most common, is known as aerial diffusion. This involves the burning or spreading of an oil to distribute it equally throughout the air of a room. This is usually used for improving fragrance or for disinfecting the air. The second main method is direct inhalation, which is mainly used for treatment of various respiratory problems. The third method is topical application, where various aromatic oils are used in massage, baths, and heated compresses.

The theory behind the effectiveness of aromatherapy is that the oil, in aerial form, has direct pharmacological effects on the cells of the body, and can work by fighting infection or releasing tension. It is also believed that aroma has a direct effect on the brain and can help increase focus, improve mood, and improve one’s overall health condition.

Although lighting a candle or spreading particularly good-smelling oil throughout a room can be done simply for decorative purposes, it is quite possible that there is much potential for health benefits for you and your family. Aromatherapy is a simple, low cost method of alternative medicine that can be done in your home, and can have immediate effects on your mood and physical health, allowing you to feel better just by breathing in the air around you.
