What is Colonic Irrigation

March 8, 2010

The idea of colon cleansing has been around in one form or another since the ancient Greeks, but has grown in popularity over the past several decades. There are many different perceived methods for this. Some involve taking supplements of fiber and other helpful vitamins and minerals that are believed to cleanse the colon. Others involve something referred to as colon hydrotherapy, or colonic irrigation.

Colonic irrigation uses enemas to inject liquid into the colon. Sometimes this liquid is pure water, while in other cases, it has been mixed with herbs or healing oils. This helps get old waste off of the colon and clean it off, which is said to help the colon work better and aid in digestion and overall health. Some also say that this can help people lose weight quicker than they would otherwise.

The colonic irrigation is used to treat a variety of different problems. It can help people who have problems with constipation and bloating or intestinal pains on a regular basis. It also is believed to help people lose weight, as long as they afterwards switch to a healthy diet. Some believe that this cleanse can also help deal with infections such as eczema and acne. Even continuous fatigue could be relieved with this form of colon cleanse.

The procedure is usually done in a clinic, but there are kits available that allow people to perform the procedure in their own home. For people who do choose to use these kits, it is important that they follow the directions exactly and disinfect all equipment to ensure that the risk of infection is reduced as much as possible. The 45 minute procedure requires room enough to lay down on a board in the bathroom that is level with the toilet. For those who do not have the room, or who would prefer to have the procedure done by a professional, there are many clinics that specialize in colon health.

Many clinics are in combination with a spa and wellness center. Prices for a cleansing session typically start around $50, although there are generally bundle options available that include options such as once a week cleansing at a discounted price. This is generally a safer option, as the person performing the procedure will be a trained professional, and the room and equipment will all be sterilized according to national standards. These sessions take anywhere from 45 minutes to one hour, but more time should be allowed to get ready for the procedure. Although it may be uncomfortable at first, clients generally describe the process as gentle, relaxing, and purifying.

Colon cleansing, or colonic irrigation, has grown in popularity quite rapidly over the past decade. There are now clinics in nearly all major cities across the United States, and are available in Europe as well. Whether used on a regular basis as a preventative measure against disease and decay, or only from time to time to help combat disease or infection, it is certain that colonic irrigation is a purifying experience.
