What is Magnet Therapy?

March 18, 2010

Have you watched the guys on the golf tours and noticed their shiny little bracelets around their wrists? Some of those glittering bracelets are not just there for decoration, they are there to try to help the player with the power of magnet therapy. What is magnet therapy?

The history of using magnets for medicinal purposes goes back through the centuries and has been recorded thousands of years ago in Greece, Egypt, China, and many other diverse locations around the world. In the earlier days of magnet therapy the body was often aligned with the earth’s magnetic poles along with using magnetized stones placed on the body.

What is magnet therapy’s method of providing relief? The belief is the magnetic fields help to unblock energy in different parts of the body, and to help the flow of healing energy in parts of the body requiring assistance. Another often suggested reason for improving health is the potential of magnets causing increased blood flow to the specific area.

In recent years the use of magnetic bracelets and bands placed near injured or painful joints has become very popular. Many users of these magnetic aids report improvement in arthritic conditions, the aches of injured joints, and accelerated healing after strenuous activity. You can also buy clothing with magnets sewn in, mattresses and mattress pads fitted with rows of magnets strategically placed to aid your full body, and many other forms of magnetic healing aids.

How does science look at the use of magnetic therapy for healing and pain relief? At this time there is no conclusive scientific evidence supporting the theory, but there is no conclusive scientific evidence disproving the theory either. Many researchers point to the extreme difficulty in creating a blind test, since the magnets are easy to be seen by the patients, and will have an effect on how they report their results.

Do all people report success using magnets? As with any form of treatment, whether it is a form of alternative medicine, or a carefully researched medical breakthrough, results vary for different individuals. The real magic may be simply giving your mind a place to focus your thoughts, and your own healing desires. Your mind is a very powerful component of the healing process, and of pain management. If you believe magnets are going to work for you, and you keep your thoughts directed at the healing potential, your chances of feeling relief increase greatly. When you go into any form of treatment filled with doubts and negative thoughts the odds of success decrease dramatically.

What is magnet therapy’s comparison to other forms of alternative medicine? When compared to many other forms of alternative medicine the results are very comparable. The choice of trying magnet therapy is really in your own hands. There is no guarantee of success as with any form of treatment, but if you can gain potential relief by simply adding magnetic aids to your life, it is one of the easiest, and low maintenance methods of treatment.
