What is Thai Massage?
You do not need to travel to Thailand to discover what is a Thai massage. If you really want to see many of the factors involved in a Thai massage, your best place might be to drop by a Yoga class.
Thai massage is a very unique form of massage. Instead of the rhythmic rubbing, tapping, or kneading done in most forms of massage, it is highlighted by intensive stretching, elongating, along with deep massage. If you have ever watched someone practicing Yoga, you are going to discover your body assuming many of the same positions, but with almost no effort on your part.
Relaxation is one of the most important ingredients you must bring to a Thai massage. Your masseuse is going to have you laying on a mat on the floor. You will be wearing loose fitting clothes which move freely on your body. The clothes may be clothes you wore into the session, or they may provide you with a loose fitting set of cotton pants and top. Once you are on the floor, your job is to completely relax, and allow your masseuse to do all the work. This may sound easy, but for many people they wish to use their own muscles to assist in the movements, you will understand why in a moment.
During your massage, your Thai masseuse will be bending your legs, stretching them over your head to stretch the hamstrings, pulling your arms in a multitude of directions, and manipulating almost every joint in your body. This does not include only your major joints in the arms and legs, expects your fingers and toes to be pulled and stretched, too. Your body will be contorted into many positions similar to yoga. It will be very tempting for you to start moving, or attempt to control the movement of your limbs. You must resist the temptation, and allow your muscles to stay relaxed and slack. Turn over complete confidence to your masseuse.
In many ways, it is easier to feel relaxed for a Thai massage than many other forms of massage. In many forms of massage you are asked to disrobe, and feel self-conscious about your body. In this form of massage you are always fully dressed, and can allow your body to simply relax. It may take you a few minutes of experiencing this form of massage before you can completely let go, but keep in mind you need to allow your muscles to be slack, and let the massage expert take over control.
What is Thai massage’s after effects? Your body will feel more balanced, elongated, and loose. A word of caution about this is in order. Do not try to hurry up off the floor after your massage, or to go running out the door. Take a little time for your body to adjust. A Thai massage, depending on thoroughness, can last up to 2 hours. Your body will have been stretched to the extreme in many directions, and you may discover movement and balance is a bit displaced for the first few minutes after the massage. Once you regain your sense of control, the relaxed feelings, the loose body, and increased range of motion will feel great.
